Institute of Development Studies Kolkata is organising a week-long workshop on Capacity Development during February 4-8, 2013 at the Salt Lake Campus of the Institute for young health researchers in Social Sciences pursuing MPhil/PhD programme or working in colleges/universities/research institutes, in government, in NGOs or in Media, having a Master's degree in any discipline from a recognised university.
Course objective
This workshop is intended for those who are interested in capacity development in health research in order to have a better understanding of various health issues by drawing on knowledge from relevant disciplines related to health, quantitative and qualitative tools for health research and perspectives of different stakeholders in the health sector. The workshop is designed for providing the participants a broad conceptual framework for understanding health related issues. Given its limited scope, the workshop will attempt to provide the participants hands-on experience on how to use evidence and tools (quantitative and qualitative) in health research as a social scientist, while taking into account the perspectives of different stakeholders and doing justice to the ethical consideration.

The workshop will contain classroom lectures, interactive sessions and workshops on the

? Overview of contemporary health research issues
? Conceptual and measurement issues on crucial health variables
? Introduction to Indian database on health
? Philosophical issues in the measurement of health inequality
? Quantitative approach to analyse health data
? Qualitative methods in health research
? Development of survey instrument in health research
? Issues in health care financing
? Environmental health issues
? Statistical software for health data analysis (Training on ADePT)
? Health Research in Social Science: perspective of physicians
? Health Research in Social Science: perspective of health administrators and policy makers
? Health Research Issues: Perspective of a community based organization
? Health Programme Evaluation
? Ethical Issues in health research
Facilities:
? All the outstation participants will be provided with local hospitality including
accommodation with twin sharing basis.
? No travel and daily allowances will be paid.
? Essential reading materials will be provided either in soft or paper versions
? After the completion of the workshop, participants will be awarded with certificates of participation.
Who can apply?
Young health researchers in social sciences pursuing MPhil or PhD programme or working in colleges/universities/research institutes, in government, in NGOs or in Media, having a Master's degree in any discipline from a recognised university.
