Background
Health economics is rapidly gaining importance as an integrated stream of public health policy and planning. However, with recognition of health as an important socio-economic determinant of development, there is a need for specialized orientation training of health economics so that its awareness and competence can be developed among various stakeholders at different levels.
The Indian Institute of Public Health ? Gandhinagar (IIPHG), in collaboration with Sardar Patel Institute of Economic and Social Research (SPIESR)? Ahmedabad, is offering a short term training workshop aimed at imparting orientation of application of economic principles in healthcare and issues around health financing, including health insurance.
Objectives
The objective of this training course is to enhance the competence of participants in the area of health economics and financing. Specifically, it aims to
1. Describe the basic concepts and approaches of health economics and financing
2. Identify and facilitate the areas of applicability, relevance and significance of economics and financing in health sector
3. Describe sources and mechanisms of financing for health programmes and activities
Contents
? Day 1:
o Health and Development
o Linkages between health and other economic sectors
o Health-income, health-development nexus : micro and macro level evidences
o Health Equity
? Day 2:
o Fundamentals of health economics : Theory and applications
o Supply and demand for health and healthcare
o Externality, Public goods, Asymmetry of information
o Importance and role of government intervention in health care markets
? Day 3:
o Basics of economic evaluations of healthcare programmes
o Measurement of cost and Measurement of outcome
o Cost effectiveness, cost-utility and cost benefit analyses
? Day 4:
o Health expenditure and financing
o Health financing in India
o Health Insurance in India - social insurance, private insurance, community health insurance schemes, Rashtriya Swastya Bima Yojana (RSBY) etc.
Who can participate?
This programme is designed with twin purpose of imparting economic perspective to development sector professionals and health perspective to economic fraternity. The workshop will be useful to Public health officials, Medical professionals, Insurance sector professionals, independent scholars or NGO members working in the area of public health, social science and development professionals. It can also be useful to the graduate / post graduate students of public health, medicine as well as economics. Maximum participants will be twenty five.
Course fee
The course fee is Rs. 6000 inclusive of course fee, lunch, refreshments and workshop materials per participant. A modest accommodation in IIPHG hostel is available for Rs. 350 per day on twin sharing basis and inclusive of food. Fee to be paid as DD / Cheque drawn in favour of Indian Institute of Public Health -
Gandhinagar payable at Ahmedabad.
