UGC-SAP sponsored National Seminar on ENVIRONMENT, CITIZENSHIP AND THE STATE 23rd and 24th March 2011

UGC-SAP sponsored National  Seminar on ENVIRONMENT, CITIZENSHIP AND THE STATE 23rd and 24th March 2011
Organized by the Department of Political Science, Gauhati University, Guwahati 781014
The emerging threat of climate change, environmental degradation and distress caused by the rapid process of globalization has affected global, national and regional societies. In understanding this threat to the environment and the consequent environmental threat to humanity one needs to move beyond the territories of the sciences to the realm of politics and society. This seminar seeks to navigate through the complex relationship of environment with that of citizenship and the state. While the seminar will take up the global and India's locational context in general, it would also be an endeavour to comprehend particularly the issues and concerns that are being confronted by North East India.

The seminar proposes to address the following ?
1. Conceptualization of threat to environment and environmental threat,
2. Response of the global, national and regional communities/societies  to environmental crisis,
3. Response of the State towards protecting the earth, environment, bio-diversity and its citizens,
4. Nature of environmental politics, ecological citizenship and sustainable development,
5. Affects of flood, riverbank-erosion, soil degradation, land-slide, natural resource depletion and deforestation on the citizen's right to livelihood, shelter, health and dignity,
6. Contestations over Mega-dams,
7. Resource competitions/conflicts among different ethnic groups and classes,
8. Role of state in ensuring justice to the environment and its citizens within the framework of democracy.  How to link the local with regional, national and global understanding of environmental issues? Does human security approach address the environmental insecurities? What about the "risk society" approach?

Papers are invited for presentation on the above themes and beyond. The abstract should reach the organizer by 1st March and full paper by 12th March 2011. Limited number of travel grant is available for the participants.
