ABOUT THE SEMINAR

Hill women's are suffering from very hard work which takes heavy toll on them. Women in the hills is seen working so much and so often, that her health is taken for granted. Dominated by men and guided by traditions, women in hills live a very hard life. The women walk daily 1-2 km of mountain roads to fetch the drinking water. This heavy work is bound to impact on the health of women and girls in Uttarakhand.  One of the most common complaint women have is Leukemia, poor nutrition and anemia and body ache. In the rural area 50% of women, 70% of girls and 80% of children are suffering from anemia.  60% of children in rural area are not getting adequate nutrition.

Now, when we talk about the political participation of the women. We can say that the Chipko Movement is an outstanding example where the short and meek looking women in solidarity protected the environment and prevented the cutting of trees by taking on the men, Mafia and muscle power. The Uttarakhand agitation is a great land mark in the awakening of political consciousness of women. The women understand the need for participation in large numbers in the broader political movements for a cause and participated eagerly in the regional movement for securing a separate state. The came forward attending meetings campaigning, leading, shouting slogans and marching for the cause of a state.
