New academic opportunities from the Virtual Institute network

I am pleased to forward the following academic offers proposed by the Virtual Institute's extended network of partners. I hope you find them of interest.

The Partnership for Economic Policy invites developing country research teams to submit proposals on topics related to inclusive growth and employment. Particularly welcome are research projects on: providing social protection to the informal sector; youth employment and entrepreneurship; employment intensity of non-agricultural growth; China's growth: Opportunities and challenges for developing countries; entrepreneurial risk tolerance by gender; discrimination in credit access for women at the SME level.

The first phase of the "Policy Analysis on Growth and Employment" programme will fund 28 projects. Deadline for submissions is November 5.

The United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) invites contributions from researchers that critically examine the scope for expanding social and solidarity economy (SSE) and its potential and limits as a distinctive approach to development.

Key themes include: conceptualizing, measuring and appraising SSE; expanding SSE through market relations; enabling SSE through public policy and the state; and social movements, networks and the politics of change.

Selected papers will be presented at an international symposium provisionally planned for 6-8 May 2013. It is anticipated that UNRISD will be able to cover travel and accommodation costs. In the event of financial restrictions, priority will be given to researchers from developing countries.

Abstracts, along with the author's CV, must be submitted to [email protected] by November 15.

The Institute for African Development at Cornell University, in collaboration with the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), has issued a call for proposals in preparation for its upcoming symposium, "Growth, poverty, and inequality: Confronting the challenges for a better life for all in Africa," to be held April 13, 2012.

The symposium will critically examine a variety of issues, including strategies for ensuring that growth translates into improved livelihoods for people. The symposium will also examine how other regions such as Latin America and Asia have fared, and what lessons and applications can be drawn for Africa.

One-page, single-spaced proposals, containing name, title, institutional affiliation and full contact details, are accepted until November 30. Funding is available to assist presenters in paying for travel expenses and lodging at Cornell.
