The conference is aimed at understanding whether and in what ways reservation for women in the Panchayat Raj Institution has resulted in the deepening of the process of democracy. The point is to probe into whether the process of local governance has been able to facilitate a more inclusive, equal and equitable notion of citizenship, and how women negotiate various hierarchies in this process, within a range of social institutions- state, market, civil society that interact with each other in complex ways.
This conference will be primarily focusing on interaction between various scholars in the field of gender and local governance with the aim of producing an edited volume with selected papers from those presented at the conference. The conference will be divided in the following thematic areas
- Panchayat Raj Institution and Women's reservation: Systemic and Institutional Challenges faced by women in governance
- Caste, Class and Gender in Local Governance
- Politics of Invisibility: Negotiation of Elected Women Representative between their domestic and public lives
- Violence and Women in Local Governance
- The process of leadership among Elected Women Representatives and the role of Movements and Civil Societies in the process.
- Collective action as political mobilisation.
Abstracts are invited for papers in these broad thematic areas. Last date for receiving abstracts is 30th June 2010. Selected scholars will be notified by 7th July 2010. All the selected applicants will have to submit completed papers by 30th July 2010. All the selected papers will be circulated among the participants and each participant will, in addition to presenting her/his own paper, have to discuss another paper that will be announced to him/her in advance. Since the focus of this conference is on a well informed discussion, it is compulsory that all the papers be read by all the participants. The Conference will be held in Indian Habitat Centre, New Delhi and outstation participants will be given travel grants (AC II). Please send your abstract and CV to [email protected].
