2. ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND:
The Kusuma Trust UK was set up in 2008 to implement the philanthropic aspirations of its founders. The Trust is a charitable company registered with the UK Charity Commission (Charity Registration No.: 1126983).
The Kusuma Trust UK has developed its strategy for 2011-2014 and decided to increase the capacity of its team to develop a more robust and systematic approach to research, monitoring and evaluation, as well as increase the impact of its work.

The Kusuma Trust UK would like to recruit an experienced and talented Research and Evaluation Manager (REM), with a proven track record, to lead all aspects of its research, monitoring and evaluation work across all grants.
3. JOB DESCRIPTION/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting directly to the CEO in London, the REM will work closely with teams in the UK and India, as well as with grantees and research partners, to develop, plan, manage and execute the full range of the Trust's research and evaluation activities. The REM will also support the advocacy function within the Trust by drawing on evidence from its projects and documenting its education models, helping in the publication and wide dissemination of outcomes.
The REM will be responsible for developing, planning, managing and delivering all aspects of the Trust's research, monitoring and evaluation work across its grants; establishing stakeholder relationships to promote the dissemination and taking-up of findings; and ensuring that research, monitoring and evaluation processes and systems inform about the Kusuma Trust UK's impact and grant-making.
The REM will liaise closely with Kusuma Trust UK staff, Kusuma Foundation - India staff, grantees, the Board of Trustees, Advisory Group and Consultants.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Research:
(1) Lead and design research and analysis of the gaps and barriers in education and other strategic areas, including access, quality and relevance;
(2) Lead the development and use of robust research protocols to ensure the credibility of research findings;
(3) Design and manage qualitative research to understand the impact on beneficiaries, including multiplier effects and unintended outcomes;
(4) Lead the design and management of annual research in a selected thematic area relevant to the strategy;
(5) Manage an annual research award scheme to outstanding young researchers to conduct research to further our mission;
(6) Keep abreast of, and actively disseminate, new research findings and evidence related to education, education systems and innovations in education.
2. Monitoring & Evaluation:
(1) Design and lead baseline assessments and outcome evaluations of projects, ensuring that these assessments and evaluations are integrated into projects and the findings inform implementation;
(2) Provide specialised expertise in formative research (qualitative and quantitative) to support the identification and prioritisation of key barriers and gaps, as well as project design;
(3) Lead the development of monitoring and evaluation systems and frameworks to guide monitoring and evaluation activities for each project;
(4) Develop and track a set of key performance indicators and means of assessment against these indicators for funded projects;
(5) Develop and/or adapt practical monitoring and reporting tools for projects;
(6) Develop survey instruments and manuals for data collection and analysis by field workers.
3. Learning and Advocacy:
(1) Work closely with senior colleagues to ensure that the evidence generated from research and evaluation activities contributes to change in systems and influences the practices and policies of implementers, other donors, government and policy bodies;
(2) Lead the development and writing of high quality technical papers, reports, media communications and publications based on our research and evaluation work;
(3) Promote publication of the findings of the annual research on the selected thematic area in relevant professional publications;
(4) Track developments in government and other donor policies, identifying and maximising opportunities to advocate using evidence from our projects and research
4. Technical Support and Relationships:
(1) Provide technical support to grantees and programme colleagues in research, monitoring and evaluation;
(2) Collaborate with relevant research agencies, advocacy groups and other donors for advocacy purposes;
(3) Identify, select and assess suitable human resources including: consultants and institutions to undertake key monitoring and evaluation assignments, reviews, mid-term evaluations and final evaluations of the projects selected for implementation;
(4) Ensure that the provision of monitoring, outcomes, evaluation and research information enables the CEO and Board to understand impact, manage performance and to learn from experience.

4. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES:
Qualifications:
Applicants must have a masters-level degree in international development, research, development economics, public policy or a related field.
Applicants possessing a Ph.D. in research, development economics, public policy or international development would be at an advantage.
Experience:
(1) At least five years of senior-level experience in monitoring, evaluation and/or research;
(2) Demonstrated technical expertise in quantitative and qualitative social research
methods;
(3) Extensive experience in research and evaluation management and/or execution.
Skills and Attributes:
(1) Solid experience in monitoring and evaluating development projects in India;
(2) Ability and credibility to build strategic relationships and partnerships with global, regional and country research and evaluation experts, both individual and institutional;
(3) Experience in the use of evaluation and research evidence for policy and practice development;
(4) Experience in specifying and contracting research and evaluation;
(5) Strong analytical skills, with expert knowledge of common statistical software packages;
(6) Excellent writing skills and the ability to document clearly and succinctly for internal and external audiences, including writing evaluation and learning papers;
(7) Highly developed interpersonal and presentation skills;
(8) Ability to demonstrate clarity of thought and provide clear guidance and direction to others;
(9) Familiarity and experience with real-time management information systems and knowledge management platforms;
(10)Demonstrated experience in working successfully within teams and working to tight deadlines;
(11) Commitment to the values, vision and mission of the Trust;
(12) Expertise in promoting a learning culture;
(13) Experience of working in other developing countries;
(14) Patience and a sense of humour;
(15) A passion for creative problem solving and enthusiasm about working in a 'start-up.'

5. COMPENSATION OFFERED:
Gross compensation budgeted for the position on a cost to organization basis is INR.12 to 15 lacs per annum. The offer made to the selected candidate shall be commensurate with qualifications, experience and salary history
6. LENGTH OF CONTRACT:
Two year fixed term contract (renewable). This is a full-time national position based in Delhi and reporting to the CEO, Kusuma Trust UK at London.
