Call for papers and invitation to Research Training,

The purpose of the African Academy for Research Training on Innovation and Competence Building Systems (AfricaLics Academy) is to support the training of African Ph.D. students engaged in research on Learning, Innovation and Competence Building Systems for Development and stimulate their awareness of policy and management issues related to this field of research.
The Academy aims at improving students' ability to undertake theoretically informed and policy-relevant empirical work on issues related with innovation in firms and societies, and its relationship with economic development. The Academy will invite frontier researchers in innovation and development from around the world to provide lectures and mentor students. The topics of the lectures will cover specific issues within innovation studies and economic development as well as research methods and innovation policy. Particular attention will be given to topics directly relevant to African priorities. The on-going work of participants will be discussed and they will get feedback from senior scholars and from the other participants.

(Ethiopia and Denmark); Martin Bell (United Kingdom); Rasigan Maharajh (South Africa).
Qualification requirements
To qualify for participation, the PhD student should fulfil the following requirements:
? Work explicitly on issues related to Learning, Innovation and Competence Building Systems in Africa
? Be able to present an original paper associated with his/her research work.
? Be at least in their second year of their doctoral studies.
PhD students in their first year or master students who plan to join a PhD-program with the aim of carrying out relevant research may apply and may be accepted for the Academy depending on the availability of space. Relevant experience in Science, Technology and Innovation policy making in Africa is preferable but not required.
Participants must submit an application with a paper summary (e.g. theory driven paper, progress report, empirical analysis or PhD proposal) of no more than 5 pages by August 15, 2012. The paper should state the objectives, methodology, expected results and conclusions of the work. The paper summary, a CV and a recommendation letter from the
supervisor or a senior scholar should be sent as email attachments to
[email protected].

Organisation
AfricaLics is part of the world-wide Global Network for the Economics of Learning, Innovation, and Competence Building Systems (Globelics). The AfricaLics Academy is jointly organized by the African Centre of Technology Studies (ACTS), Kenya, and Moi University, Kenya with support from Globelics Secretariat, Aalborg University, Denmark.
Working Language
This first AfricaLics Academy at Moi University, Kenya, will have English as working language. The second AfricaLics Academy to take place in Algiers April 16-30 in 2013 will use French as main language.
Accommodation and travel costs
Access to the course activities is free and accommodation expenses including meals will be covered for all selected participants. We encourage applicants to apply to their host institution or projects for travel support before sending applications. Applications for travel expenses for participants unable to secure funding from their institutions will be considered. Students must specify in their application whether they will require funding, providing an estimate of the amount required for travel expenses. Participants from outside Africa are expected to pay their travel costs with funds from their own institutions. The organizers cannot provide upfront coverage of travel costs, but can only reimburse costs after the event and on the basis of proper documentation.
