International Seminar on Youth Migration Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum

One of the remarkable characteristics of human civilization is the human mobility and  adaptability to the environment. Migration assumes a greater significance in the context of  neo liberal globalization. With the advent of globalization human mobility has become enormously frequent and also characterized by the journey of hope and uncertainty.  Migration arising out of increasing poverty, agrarian distress, unemployment and growing nature of informal sector is expected to bring about transformation in the lives of people.
Nevertheless it has become complex due to varied demographic conditions, disparities, technological advancement and increasing social networks. Youth migration is a challenging and a neglected phenomenon. When a youth migrates, she/he is faced with multiple problems and deprivations which inturn lead to conflicting
situations resulting in maladjustment with the host society, poor quality of life, risk and vulnerability, human trafficking etc. However, very little attention had gone to the notice of planners and policy makers to address this cohort of young migrants. In view of this  background, Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development, Sriperumbudur in  collaboration with Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum has planned to  organize an International seminar on ? Young people and Migration on 18th and 19th  January 2012. The themes suggested for the seminar are as follows.
