INDIAN INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED STUDY, SHIMLA Summer School on Mahabharata as a Conceptual Resource

Applications are invited for the second Summer School on the Mahabharata at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Shimla. The duration of the School will be from  12 June 2011 to 26 June 2011. It will mainly consist of lectures by Philosophers, Historians, Sanskritists, literary critics and scholars of art and aesthetics followed by discussions among the participants on a set of pre-selected readings. This year's major focus will be on the Conceptual Universe of the Mahabharata and its salience through the centuries by looking into the aspects of philosophy, narration, aesthetics, morality and polity. A detailed Concept Note can be found at the Institute's website at www.iias.org . At the end of the School, every participant will be required to submit a short monograph on a relevant theme approved by the Coordinators. Applicants should be preferably in the age group of 25-40 and should hold a Masters Degree in any subject from Humanities or Social and Natural Sciences. Proficiency in Sanskrit is NOT essential. However, a working knowledge of the language is desirable. Those interested are requested to send a one page write-up on why they would like to attend the School and the level of their acquaintance with the Mahabharata along with their CV. Travel and local hospitality will be borne by the IIAS.
