Psychoanalysis and Politics - Rhetorics of Power and Freedom of Thought - Voices of the 'It' and the 'Over-I'

Psychoanalysis and Politics - Rhetorics of Power and Freedom of Thought - Voices of the 'It' and the 'Over-I'
9th to 11th May 2014
Budapest, Hungary

We are pleased to announce that Agnes Heller, Hannah Arendt Visiting Professor of Philosophy and Political Science at the New School for Social Research, New York, will be joining us for this symposium.

Rhetorics of power can become mainstream political discourses and shape peopleâ ? ideology by totalising and impeding freedom of thought. We ask how the practice of psychoanalysis stand in relation to this, and about its political implications.(For the full text of the call for papers, please see our website.)

This is an interdisciplinary conference - we invite theoretical contributions and historical, literary or clinical case studies on these and related themes from philosophers, sociologists, psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, group analysts, literary theorists, historians and others. Perspectives from different psychoanalytic schools will be most welcome. We promote discussion among the presenters and participants, for the symposium series creates a space where representatives of different perspectives come together, engage with one another's contributions and participate in a community of thought.
Presentations are expected to take half an hour. Another 20 minutes is set aside for discussion. There is a 10 min break in between each paper. Please send an abstract of 200 to 300 words, attached in a word-document, to [email protected] by December 10th 2013. We will respond by, and present a preliminary programme on December 20th 2013. If you would like to sign up to participate without presenting a paper, please contact us after this date.
