PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The conjuncture of elements of the recent financial crises has returned the
access to finance agenda across Western economies, including the UK.
Shrinking economic growth and changes in the welfare system are likely to
exacerbate the financial stress faced by  financially vulnerable residents.
Broadly, the financial exclusion is  conceived as the  exertion or
averseness to access mainstream financial services. The statistics reveal
that in the UK, around 1.5 million adults do not have access to a bank
account; 7.8 million people are unable to access mainstream credit; and
people on benefits borrow an  estimated £330  million a year on home credit,
paying £140 million in interest. The indubitable link between financial and
social exclusion, as well on its impact on poverty and inequality debates
obliges appropriate analytical investigations into the nature  and  causes
of financial exclusion. Furthermore, despite the large advances in defining
and  measuring financial exclusion, the depiction of its determinants using
cutting-edge methodologies is still in its infant stage.

This research project is designed to advance our understanding of (1)
determinants of  financial exclusion in the UK, (2) interaction between
different forms of financial exclusion in the UK and (3) critical analysis
of required regulatory and protection measures to enhance financial
inclusion.
Applicants should have, or expect to receive a minimum of UK 2:1 honours
degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject area.
