PhD in cultural studies

Centre for the Study of Culture and Society (CSCS) invites applications for the academic year beginning August 2010. The CSCS PhD in Cultural Studies, affiliated to Manipal University and Kuvempu University, involves one year of coursework followed by supervised reading, writing and research for approximately 4 more years. Students will learn how to interpret complex texts, to understand intellectual debates that have formed the horizon of interdisciplinary cultural studies, formulate and discuss ideas and questions, and write research papers. Our faculty includes scholars known for their analyses of contemporary culture in its inter-connections with political and economic processes. Distinguished visiting faculty from India and abroad will also be involved in PhD instruction at the Centre. The PhD programme draws on and contributes to the Research Programmes that CSCS has incubated in recent years. While students may bring in research topics unconnected to programmatic concerns, students will be strongly encouraged to integrate their research with programme priorities. CSCS also offers a one-year Diploma in Cultural Studies alongside the PhD programme, open to candidates from any discipline, preferably with a post-graduate degree.
Limited PhD fellowships of Rs.10,000 per month will be offered on merit-cum-means basis. Students are also eligible to apply for part-time and full-time programme-related jobs at CSCS.
To apply: Applications should include a sample of writing such as a term paper, a current CV, transcripts of last two degrees obtained, and a covering letter stating whether one is applying for the PhD or the PG Diploma. For more information, visit the CSCS website: www.cscs.res.in.
Deadline: Completed applications must reach CSCS by April 30, 2010. E-mail and fax applications are acceptable if followed by airmailed or couriered hard copy. Interview for shortlisted candidates: June first week. Include full communication details for a quick response. Send the application and supporting documents in an envelope marked "PhD/Diploma Programme" to:
