Perfect Match: EndNote?s latest feature matches article drafts with publications

?manuscript matcher

By Sarah Tanksalvala

EndNote has been helping researchers organize, research and cite
while they write for years, but now it can help them with the publishing
process, too. The program?s newest feature combines state-of-the-art
algorithms with the highly curated citation data of the Web of ScienceTM to help match manuscripts with target journals.

EndNote users automatically have access to the manuscript matcher,
and can currently access it via EndNote online. They?ll input the title
and abstract of their paper and select their appropriate EndNote
reference group. The program uses this information, along with data
about each Web of Science journal, to recommend where the article has
the best chance of being published.

?Based on a lot of research, we saw the selection of a good match
between a manuscript and potential journal as a real  pain point for our
customers,? says Jason Rollins, EndNote?s Senior Director of Mobile
Solutions and Innovation. ?We saw the opportunity to leverage the  power
of the Web of Science further into our users? workflows to provide an
informative solution.?

Studies show academic journals reject up to 93 percent of
submissions, and the top reason for rejection is that the article
doesn?t fit with the journal?s content. Not every psychology article is a
good fit for every psychology journal, and correctly identifying good
matches can save researchers time and heartache. Since every journal has
slightly different content and format requirements, each submission
must be slightly different. That makes identifying the right journal a
crucial part of the process.

And while a well-targeted article isn?t enough to ensure acceptance, it?s a big step in the right direction.

Understanding Manuscript Matcher

Manuscript matcher is one of Thomson Reuters? most innovative uses of
technology. Its recommendations are based on patent pending algorithmic
technology, using multiple algorithms simultaneously to analyze
billions of data points. The feature is also unique in that it
distinguishes between general and niche journals, ranking the latter
higher in results.

Manuscript matcher stays true to the quality and curation for which
Thomson Reuters and the Web of Science are known. Web of Science is the
gold standard of citation indices, covering a wide variety of material
while ensuring it only lists the best journals in any subject or field.
It won?t recommend inferior journals, but it will recommend journals in
any field.

?Remember, we?re based on the Web of Science,? says Rollins. ?This by
design has never been the broadest, it?s always been the most selective
and highly curated.?

It?s also convenient, as it is integrated directly into EndNote.
Users don?t need to compile and enter their data manually; it?s all in
their library. After copying and pasting their title and abstract,
recommendations are just a click of the button away.

Best of all, the recommendations will improve with time and user
feedback. Manuscript matcher includes a feedback loop asking users if
each journal recommendation is helpful. This gives a practical and human
metric to increase the accuracy of recommendations.

?We?re not just improving on our own,? Rollins says. ?Users can help to improve it too.?

Choosing a publication can be a surprisingly difficult obstacle to
overcome in getting published, and this new feature gives users a
straightforward list of reliable publications, emphasizing niche
publications, while state-of-the-art data and algorithms help simplify
the user?s workflow.

?We see this as helping [researchers] to narrow down options from
among thousands of choices, or maybe help reinforce our natural
intuition,? says Rollins. ?Ideally this will help them save time,
because if the topic is a better general match for the target journal,
it will minimize the likelihood of getting rejected.?
