How to maximize impact and visibility in bibliometric analysis: tips
The content and quality of the publication are essential in
assessing the impact and significance of the publication. However, there
are things in the publishing process which you can take into account
while planning to publish your article and which can make the research
results more visible and influential.
Publish in the language and in the publication channel that help you reach your audiencePublish your results first in the language and in the publication channel that help you reach your potential audience.
Publication channelJournals with high impact covered by the indexing service Thomson
Reuters Web of Science tend to be read and cited. Most bibliometric
analyses are conducted using the Web of Science database. Publish in
Finnish Publication Forum journals at level 2 and 3.
Impacts scoresThe impact scores will give you an indication of the average number
of citations articles in the journal receive. Publishing in a highly
cited journal increases the possibility of your publication being cited.
Impact scores are for instance Web of Science Impact Factor or SNIP by
Scopus database. You can check the scores in journal catalogs.
Publication Froum level is also an important indicator for the prestige
of the journal.
CopublishingStudies have shown that copublished publications tend to gather more citations according to the list below
1. industry-university copublications
2. international copublications
3. domestic copublications
4. authors only from one organisation
Publication typeReview articles are cited 2,5 times more than original research
articles. Also methodological articles are cited often. International
databases (WoS, Scopus) cover scientific journals comprehensively.
Conference articles, books and reports are not covered as
comprehensively. You should consider utilising further your research
data so that it can be published in an international scientific
peer-review journal and receive a larger audience.
Open Access publishingOpen Access publishing increases the visibility of publications,
making them more likely to be cited. Parallel publish in the TUT DPub
institutional repository if your publisher allows it. Some funders may
require Open Access publishing.
Publisher and the choice of a journalIf you intend to publish in a journal by a publisher you are not familiar with, check some things before the decision
- is journal indexed in journal catalogs Ulrich?s/DOAJ/JCR/Scopus
- does journal have an ISSN number
- copyright policies of the journal
- are there noted researchers in the editorial board
- are researchers in your field publishing in this journal
- Open access policy and embargo
Publication title and metadataThe title of the publication should be easy to understand,
informative and specific enough. You should include the most relevant
terms in your abstract to make the publication easier to find by search
engines. Pay attention also to the keywords.
Researcher identificationUse the same format for your name consistently and use researcher
identifiers: ORCID, ResearchID. Check your publications from
international databases and get in contact with the service provider if
there are mistakes in your publication information.
AffiliationState your contact information clearly in the publication. Enter the
name of the university first and use the following format: University,
Faculty, Department, City, Country. For example: Tampere University of
Technology, Faculty of Science, Department of Physics, Tampere, Finland.
Register your publications in TUT Portfolio databasePublication data recorded in TUT Portfolio database is used in
performance based evaluation at the university and in the national
publication data callection by the Ministry of Education and Culture,
which also imports the data into the national publication data portal
Juuli and national statistics.
Learn about publishingJoin the library at Author Seminar events oragnized with publishers
for useful information about the publishing process. There 1-2 events
per year.
Networking at events and onlineAt conferences and other meetings you can network with people working
in the same field of reserach. Make your publications visible with
online services such as LinkedIn, Google Scholar, Mendelay, Twitter and
Microsoft Academic Search. Refer to your publications with unique
identifiers such as DOI.
