A New Agenda? Debating the Middle East and Central Asia Early-Career Researcher Conference

A New Agenda? Debating the Middle East and Central Asia Early-Career Researcher Conference

3rd to 4th July 2015
Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies, the Australian National University
Canberra, Australia

Are tried and tested narratives providing adequate explanations for the new challenges and changing circumstances in the Middle East and Central Asia?

The conference will be an audit of how scholars have long approached and viewed the region and a chance for early career researchers and graduate students to grapple with urgent challenges facing Middle East and Central Asian studies and area studies.

Papers submitted should be within the disciplines of Political Science, International Relations and cognate social science disciplines. Only submissions from early career researchers and exceptional graduate students will be considered. Papers that engage with debates around the way in which the Middle East and Central Asia are being discussed and analysed in the current political climate are particularly welcome. Themes that might be addressed include: political economy, nationalism, political Islam, gender, history, peace and conflict, state and human security, state building, social and political movements, or culture and society.

Important Dates:

- Deadline for Abstracts (300 words max): 27 February 2015
- Notification of acceptance: 13 March 2015
- Deadline for full papers: 8 May 2015
- Conference: 3-4 July 2015

Exceptional conference papers will be considered for publication in either an edited book or guest-edited volume of a high quality journal.
